The Kings picking up the option on the contract of power forward Carl Landry
for next season wasn't a surprise, but it was one less thing for the player
to worry about entering the offseason.
國王下個球季留下洗衣店已經幾乎成定局
Landry is looking forward to his fourth NBA season, one in which he'll begin
the campaign as a starter for the first time after a midseason trade sent him
from Houston to the Kings.
Landry plans to start his first full season in Sacramento with an improved
defensive game and more versatility to what already is a diverse offensive
game.

Landry said he plans to improve his footwork and study film in hopes of being
able to defend smaller players on the perimeter.
While Landry usually bangs his body against fellow power forwards on defense,
he sees expanding his defensive skills as the next step in improving his
overall play.

"A little bit," Landry said by phone from Houston of his experience defending
on the perimeter. "I've defended some of the bigger threes – Lamar Odom (of
the Lakers), Shawn Marion (of Dallas). Smaller ones, not necessarily, but
when there are bigger threes out there, I think I should be able to do that."
Any discussion of a King improving on defense is always welcome around Arco
Arena. The Kings allowed 104.4 points per game in 2009-10, sixth-most in the
NBA.

And if Landry could defend bigger small forwards on a regular basis, it would
give the Kings more lineup flexibility.
Landry is eager to step out of the comfort of the paint and cover more space
on the floor.
"It's footwork, being in the (defensive) stance, basketball IQ and really
just moving your feet," Landry said. "Big guys usually just stand and bang."

The physical part of his position isn't lost on Landry. He also plans to work
on his post defense and rebounding.
Landry averaged 6.5 rebounds in 28 games with the Kings, a pace that would
have put him second behind team leader Jason Thompson.

Landry plans to study some of the NBA's better and craftier post defenders to
find things to add to his résumé.
"Experience is the best teacher, and learning from guys like (Houston's)
Chuck Hayes, (San Antonio's) Tim Duncan, who is a great player, or
(Toronto's) Reggie Evans," Landry said.
Duncan has used his length to bother opponents for years. Hayes and Evans
have gotten by with positioning and using skill to defend bigger players in
the paint.
Hayes, Landry's former teammate in Houston, started at center for the Rockets
despite being just 6-foot-6, three inches shorter than Landry.

Landry's summer plans also include a basketball camp in Sacramento in June
and finding a permanent address.
Landry lived in a Sacramento hotel after being traded in February.
"Those days are over," Landry said. "I'm looking forward to coming back and
getting established."
