A solitary strike from Marek Hamsik returned Napoli to second spot in Serie
A, but the Partenopei made hard work of beating 10-man Chievo 1-0.
Upwardly-mobile Inter Milan had edged into second spot earlier in the day, t
hrowing down the gauntlet to Walter Mazzarri's Napoli, who were without inju
red star striker Edinson Cavani.
But the alternative strike duo of Lorenzo Insigne and Goran Pandev struggled
to take up the Uruguayan's mantle, falling over each other to waste promisi
ng opportunities.
Slovakian playmaker Hamsik took matters into his own hands and fired the onl
y goal of the game to keep the Campanians within three points of Juventus, b
efore Chievo's Kamil Vacek saw red late on.
Inter had earlier leapfrogged Napoli and into second place thanks to a 3-1 v
ictory at Bologna.
Andrea Ranocchia gave the visitors the lead in the 27th minute before Diego
Milito added a second just after the half-time break.
Nicolo Cherubin replied immediately, but Esteban Cambiasso scored his first
goal of the season minutes later to seal Inter's fifth consecutive win, whic
h keeps the Nerazzurri four points shy of the reigning champions.
Udinese turned the tables on Roma at the Stadio Olimpico, recovering from go
ing two goals down by picking up a valuable three points with of a 3-2 victo
ry.
Two goals in two minutes from Erik Lamela appeared to have put the Gialloros
si on the way to victory, but they suddenly stopped playing, allowing Udines
e to hit back at them.
Maurizio Domizzi pulled a goal back before half-time and Antonio Di Natale b
rought them level early in the second half.
Di Natale then scored the winner from the penalty spot and Panagiotis Tachts
idis completed Roma's self-destruction by earning a red card in stoppage tim
e.
Juventus had Arturo Vidal and some controversial refereeing decisions to tha
nk as they edged out Catania 1-0, in the early kick-off.
After the hosts had a goal disallowed in the 25th minute, and the Sicilians'
owner and president Antonio Pulvirenti was sent away from the bench, the ho
me side struggled to maintain a level head and Juve took advantage.
Vidal scored the only goal of the game 12 minutes after the interval, which,
unlike Catania's effort, should have been disallowed and it was enough to e
arn the Bianconeri all three points.
Catania's afternoon was then compounded as they ended the game with 10 men a
fter Giuseppe Marchese was sent off.
Fiorentina needed two wonder goals to see off nine-man Lazio 2-0 in a game r
iddled with controversial refereeing decisions.
Adem Ljajic drove a rocket into Albano Bizzarri's net after referee Mauro Be
rgonzi had bizarrely ruled out his tap-in following Mati Fernandez's saved p
enalty.
Lazio rallied after the interval, but grew frustrated when Stefano Mauri's g
oal was ruled out for a contentious offside, with both Cristian Ledesma and
Hernanes sent to the changing rooms as tempers began to fray.
Vincenzo Montella's men had kept their cool, though, and veteran striker Luc
a Toni rubber-stamped all three points with a ferocious strike at the death.
Fiorentina's victory sees them climb into fifth place in the league table, h
alving the six-point advantage of the capital club, who slip to fourth.
Parma registered their first away victory of the season by means of a 3-1 tr
iumph at 10-man Torino, while Daniele Dessena scored the only goal of the ga
me as Cagliari claimed their third successive 1-0 win away to Sampdoria.
Elsewhere, Atalanta overcame the dismissal of Federico Peluso to hold off th
e challenge of Pescara in a goalless contest at the Stadio Adriatico.
Saturday
Stephan El Shaarawy's goal against his former club was enough to earn AC Mil
an all three points against Genoa at a semi-deserted San Siro.
The Italy international decided a tense encounter in the 77th minute, resolv
ing Milan's immediate problems in Serie A, in which they have moved up to ni
nth, but leaving them still with plenty of margin for improvement.
Genoa lost their second game in a row to fall behind Milan in the table with
the managerial switch from Luigi De Canio to Luigi Del Neri having no immed
iate impact.
With a goalless draw looking increasingly likely, Ignazio Abate was sent thr
ough by Urby Emanuelson just to the right of the penalty area in the 77th mi
nute.
The linesman's flag stayed down and the Milan full-back's low cross was met
in front of goal by El Shaarawy, who stroked the ball in from five yards.
Strugglers Siena and Palermo played out a goalless draw at the Stadio Artemi
o Franchi with the result not helping either side out a great deal.
Palermo had the better chances, but were unable to beat a Siena side who, wi
thout a six-point penalty, would be ahead of the Rosaneri in the table.
As it is, though, Serse Cosmi's side are still four points adrift of the Sic
ilians, who also remain in the bottom three having played a game more than t
he teams above them.
