Finally, Linsanity comes home
Finally, Linsanity comes home
Linsanity

Linsanity certainly made its way to the Bay Area last season, but only in
spirit.
Now, Linsanity is arriving in the flesh.
Jeremy Lin turned the NBA upside down last season when he emerged from the
end of the New York Knicks' bench to dominate the league for a two-week
stretch and became an international phenomenon.
For the first time since that whirlwind rise, Lin will play in his home area
against the franchise that gave him his first out-of-nowhere shot when he
takes the floor as the Houston Rockets' point guard on Tuesday night at
Oracle Arena.
"I definitely remember those (Warriors) days, because without them, I
wouldn't be the player I am now or be where I am right now," Lin said.
Lin, who grew up in Palo Alto and played sparingly as a rookie for the
Warriors before being cut just before the 2011-12 season, said being back in
the Bay Area hasn't hit him just yet.
While trimming the athletic tape off his ankles after Monday's practice at
the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Lin said he expects the emotions to come
flooding back once he gets into Oracle Arena.
His mother has taken the brunt of responsibilities in what Lin called "easily
my busiest game of year in terms of outside stuff." She set up a luxury box
for about 20 close friends and family, some courtside seats have been
reserved, and his former coaches have been given spots right behind the
Rockets' bench.
Lin simply has to play basketball. That's something he hasn't always been
allowed to focus on since he started his professional journey.
When the Warriors signed the undrafted rookie out of Harvard, Lin had the
added pressure of being presented in his home region as worthy of attention
as an Asian player, a devout Christian player and an underdog story.
He averaged 2.6 points on 38.9 percent shooting, 1.4 assists and 1.2 rebounds
in garbage-time minutes.
"When I first signed, I didn't even know if I could make it," Lin said. "I
had a lot of growing up to do and a lot of maturation, going from the Ivy
League to the NBA. I had never seen anything like that, and going from
shooting guard to point guard, at the same time. That was just a lot at once."
Lin was the butt of locker-room jokes and the mark of every practice
challenge his rookie season. Even today, even after averaging 25 points on
50.9 percent shooting and 9.2 assists during the Linsanity weeks, Lin said
he's treated the same way by some of his old Golden State teammates.
Lin remains close with Stephen Curry and David Lee - players who he said
"took care of" him. But when the three met at a downtown Houston restaurant
before last week's game, the most popular conversation topic was still
good-natured ribbing of Lin.
Things are different in Houston. Even with a three-year, $25 million
contract, Lin doesn't feel like he's playing under a spotlight.
"I think I'm in a good place, where I can grow and mature as a player and
sort of go at a reasonable and normal pace," Lin said. "Playing here, my
rookie year was tough, because there was a lot of pressure. I wasn't ready
for it. New York is New York. Houston is kind of a nice change of pace for
me."
Lin is averaging 12.5 points on 44 percent shooting, 6.1 assists and 3.5
rebounds a game for Houston, where he seems perfectly happy to share
attention with All-Star James Harden, likable wing Chandler Parsons and
big-money center Omer Asik.
Still, Lin is a big-ticket name in more places than the Bay Area. His
"SportsCenter" commercial debuted this week with some funny references, and
he's working to get the outtakes, which he promises to be even funnier.
It's a good thing Lin has a sense of humor, because his path to the present
would have broken a lot of people. He was waived by two teams, including his
hometown squad and one that cut him on Christmas, and thought a third was
coming before Linsanity became a reality.
The Warriors' portion of the trek might be the most difficult. Lin credits
Joe Lacob with finding him and said he probably wouldn't have signed with
Golden State if not for its owner.
But after his inauspicious rookie season, Lin camped out in a gym for five or
six months and prepped for Year 2. He was promised he wouldn't be cut, signed
a lease for a new apartment, slept in it for two days and then was cut.
"Everything happens for a reason, man," Lin said. "God is faithful. I'm glad
it happened that way, even though I couldn't see it at that time."
