Rockets squash Hornets behind Harden’s 30 points

NEW ORLEANS – The Rockets had made their repairs, moved the ball and built a
lead that had reached 19. In the second half, in a stunning and crucial
turnaround, they even took care of the ball.
With nearly 10 minutes left, however, it all shut down. The ball got ‘sticky,’
as Kevin McHale hates to say but likes to put it. For nearly six minutes, the
offense that had lived up to Thursday’s session of the Kevin McHale Film
Festival shut down.
The Rockets missed seven shots with five turnovers with the Hornets closing to
10, the deficit they had made up in the Rockets previous trip to New Orleans.
Then, with absolutely no warning, ball movement was back. The Hornets blitzed
James Harden on a pick and roll and Harden quickly passed to a rolling
Patterson. Patterson found Jeremy Lin. Lin passed to Carlos Delfino and Delfino
swished his 3-pointer. With four minutes left, the Rockets offense had been
repaired, as the Rockets rolled the rest of the way, surging past the Hornets,
100-82, by doing all they had failed to do when their tailspin began in New
Orleans. Harden had 30 points and eight assists, going from seven turnovers in
the first half to one in the second half. Patrick Patterson had 18 points and
matched his career high with 13 rebounds. Jeremy Lin scored 13 points with
eight assists and matched his career high with six steals.
But more than any of that, when the game was on the line at the scene of the
decline, the Rockets took off.
But more than any of that, when the game was on the line at the scene of the
decline, the Rockets took off.
From the start, the Rockets were quicker and more aggressive, moving the ball
and themselves more rapidly, looking to run more consistently. They led by as
much as 11, just as they had in their previous game. But just as they had that
night, they also treated the ball as a stranger they were passing in the street.
The Rockets led by 10 with 6 ½ minutes left in the first half when they spent
the next three minutes turning the ball over on almost every possession. The
Hornets rushed back into the game with a 10-2 run in which the Rockets’
interrupted their run of turnovers only for Harden to take a pair of free
throws.
The five turnovers in that three-minute stretch gave the Rockets 14 in the
first half, less than two shy of their league-leading average. When they took
care of the ball in the final three minutes of the half with Harden on the
bench, they outscored New Orleans, 10-4, to take an eight-point lead into the
second half.
By then, it was obvious what needed to be done, though it had been fairly clear
for weeks. Move and take care of the ball and everything else could work, too.
