Have Inter done a great bit of business by selling Zlatan Ibrahimovic to
Barcelona? Susy Campanale thinks so.
Pundits are tearing their hair out over the tragic loss of Zlatan Ibrahimovic,
but I see it as a smart bit of business from Massimo Moratti – a rare one,
at that. While Real Madrid and Manchester City clamour to create a Panini
sticker album of a squad, Serie A sides are focusing on what really matters
in football by building a team. I believe Inter will be a better outfit
without the Swede.

Of course he is entertaining, spectacular and has often turned a game all by
himself with a moment of Ibracadabra magic, but that is the basic problem too.
Inter have been relying so heavily on their striker that the underlying issues
within the squad of a workmanlike midfield and leaving the initiative to
opponents have never been properly addressed. Without Ibrahimovic, Inter seemed
pedestrian and nowhere near a dominant force in Serie A.

So why do I say they are a better team now he has gone? Because the new
arrivals can finally forge a tactical system that works regardless of who is
in the starting XI. Jose Mourinho has no excuses now, he must deliver more
entertaining football that makes use of everyone and not just a fancy Swede
doing back heel flicks to get them out of a tricky situation. Samuel Eto’o
needs service to get the goals and cannot create them all by himself like
Ibrahimovic did, so they are forced to work out a proper tactical plan.

It is also a bonus for Inter because they can at last approach the Champions
League with some degree of confidence. When you rely entirely on your star
striker and he happens to have a dismal European record, it does not bode well
for continental glory. In three years with the Nerazzurri, Zlatan scored six
goals in 22 European games. You might say that’s not too bad, but five of them
were last season. At Juventus he failed to score in his entire opening
Champions League campaign. He often goes missing in the crunch matches,
which is a death knell for the rest of the team.

Barcelona can probably get by without him pretty well and carry Ibra during
those tough times, but Inter were too lazy or spoilt to work out a Plan B.
Now they are forced to confront their weaknesses and will come out of it
stronger.
