West African nations have threatened to close all land borders with Mali and
freeze the nation's bank account unless the mutinous soldiers who seized
control in a coup last week hand over power to civilians within 72 hours.

The financial sanctions announced on Thursday are among the harshest imposed
in recent years on a nation in West Africa and if put in place are likely to

Announcing the move, Kadre Desire Ouedraogo, the president of the commission
