This isn’t a story about a beer-commercial bro-mance. It is a story about stereotyping and unintended messages. But mostly it’s about Diaw and coach Paul Silas discovering something in Brown that even Brown gave up on long ago. How often has Diaw’s game been described as “passes to a fault?’’ But the best thing about Diaw is his exceptional basketball intellect. He recognized how defenses ignored Brown in the paint, and the opportunity that presented. “If you dominate the paint, you dominate the game,’’ Diaw described. “They ’re always the highest-percentage shots. So of course if I see the center open, I’m going to throw it to him.’’ Defenses naturally rushed from Brown to Diaw when Diaw started dribbling toward the basket. Brown always reminds himself “stay big,’’ as in present a prominent target for the passer. Diaw delivers him the ball. “I said, ‘Man, I need you!’ I need you in this game!’ ’’ Kwame Brown said of Diaw. “We need him as a team, and I need him because he’s such a good passer.’’ Just like Brown is a good scorer.
