Lleyton, Bec ignore doubters 07feb05 TENNIS star Lleyton Hewitt and soapie princess Bec Cartwright have defied critics of their whirlwind courtship, saying it was right from the start. Hewitt proposed to the 21-year-old after his loss to Russian Marat Safin in the Australian Open final - just six weeks after the couple began dating. The first pictures of Cartwright's Tiffany & Co diamond ring, said to be worth up to $200,000, have now been published in New Idea magazine. "I knew it was going to happen that night. I just thought the timing was right," Hewitt told the magazine. "It would have been great to have had the Australian Open trophy too, to make it that little more special, but I won the biggest prize. "I lost the match, but I won the girl." The pair had spoken about marriage before Hewitt proposed, but it was a shock for Cartwright on the night. Hewitt did not get down on bended knee when he popped the question in the pair's Park Hyatt Hotel suite because he was too sore after his match. Cartwright squealed "Oh my God," closely followed by "Yes", according to the magazine. The pair met five years ago when they played together in a Starlight Foundation Charity Tennis Day, and had stayed in touch via text messages since then. Their engagement comes less than four months after Hewitt's break-up with former world number one women's tennis player Kim Clijsters. Cartwright had a four-year romance with Home and Away co-star Beau Brady. The pair said they were not worried by negative comments about their relationship. "It doesn't bother us because we both know what it is. We know it feels right and we can see each other being really happy for the rest of our lives," Cartwright said. Hewitt said: "I've probably put up with more criticism than a lot of people out there. At the end of the day, you block out everything, especially with your personal life. "What feels right to you, you don't second guess yourself. For us, it just felt so awesome right from the start." Hewitt credits Cartwright as being a positive influence on his tennis career during the past few months.
