Joe Johnson Agrees to $120 Million Contract with Atlanta Hawks

Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson has agreed to a six-year, $120 million deal

On the first day of the much-anticipated free agency period of 2010, two NBA
franchises have opted to offer maximum contracts to their young stars. It was
reported earlier today that the Memphis Grizzlies agreed in principle to a
five-year, $80 million deal with 23-year-old small forward Rudy Gay. In the
most significant move of the offseason thus far, the Atlanta Hawks have
followed in Memphis’ footsteps by offering their star guard, Joe Johnson, a
maximum contract that is worth approximately $120 million over the next six
seasons.
Many media members have been speculating that the landscape of the entire NBA
would be altered permanently by the highly regarded 2010 free agent class.
While free agency has just begun and the highest-profile stars in the class -
LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Amare Stoudemire and Chris Bosh - have yet to make
decisions about their future, the contracts that Gay and Johnson signed with
their current teams may foreshadow how much could stay the same in the end.
Johnson, a four-time NBA All-Star who was named to the All-NBA third team in
2010, will have to wait until July 8 to finalize his deal since the new
salary cap will take effect on that date. Last season, he averaged 21.3
points, 4.9 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game during the regular season.
However, his postseason struggles and continuous domination of the ball in
the Atlanta offense led many to believe that he was not deserving of a
maximum contract.
