Day 7 - July 22 - Game #34 Utah 82, Atlanta 71 1 2 3 4 F Atlanta 16 14 19 22 71 Utah 21 17 21 23 82 Recap The Revue host Utah Jazz came out fired up and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game, jumping out to a quick 9-2 lead. Jazz rookie Kirk Snyder fueled the charge with five quick points, and a tightfisted defense helped create easy transitions baskets. Atlanta rookie Josh Smith continued to play strong in the Revue, scoring two points, blocking a shot and altering others. Former Brigham Young University guard Travis Hansen score two points in the quarter on a monster fast break dunk, but still the Hawks trailed at the quarter, 21-16. A stagnant Jazz offense in the first few minutes of the second quarter enabled the Hawks to cut the lead to one. But it wouldn’t stay that way for long; the Jazz would use a 12-2 run to keep the Hawks against the ropes. The Hawks, however, were tireless in their effort to catch the Jazz; doing everything they could to disrupt the Jazz. Raul Lopez scored seven points in the quarter and dished out two assists and Kirk Snyder grabbed four rebounds on their way to a 38-30 advantage at the half. Tempers flared a bit between players, resulting in technical fouls being charged to Utah’s Kueth Duany and Atlanta’s Royal Ivie. Atlanta tried to gain ground on the Utah’s lead by swarming them on defense and led to four steals and eight fast break points. Travis Hansen put together a solid third quarter, connecting on two-of-three shots for five points and two boards; shaking off a tough first half. The Jazz used back-to-back three-pointers from Raul Lopez and Ruben Douglas, who was fouled on his and hit the free throw to complete the four point play, to maintain a comfortable lead through the quarter. The Jazz and Hawks matched shots for most of the quarter without any team able to gain ground or pull away. But with just under a minute to go, the Hawks made things interesting. Josh Childress hit a three and then on the ensuing inbounds, the Hawks stole the ball and Royal Ivie scored and was fouled by Curtis Borchart, who was called for goaltending on the play, also. A missed free throw by Ivie was rebounded by Cory Violette and put back in to cut the Jazz lead to five. But the Hawks wouldn’t get any closer; forced to foul, the Jazz hit their foul shots down the stretch to preserve an 82-71 victory. Kirk Snyder led all scores with 23 points, while Travis Hansen and Josh Smith led all Hawks with 13.
