[新聞] Notes: Kuo pushed up a day
Lefty to pitch on three days' rest so Penny can start in Arizona
TORONTO -- Some pitchers might have worried about being dropped from the
starting rotation after a night like the one Hong-Chih Kuo had Thursday.
Instead, he's moving up in the rotation.
Dodgers manager Grady Little said that Kuo -- who made 56 pitches (43 while
facing 11 batters in the second inning) and allowed eight runs in only 1 2/3
innings -- will switch spots with Brad Penny and pitch Sunday at Tampa Bay
instead of Monday night in Arizona, when Penny (9-1) will start.
"It gives Penny one more day, and we want him to pitch in the series in
Arizona [because of its importance]," said Little.
Throwing Kuo on Sunday means he will again follow fellow lefty Randy Wolf.
Little used the two days off in the last 10 days to juggle his rotation
specifically to split up the two lefties. Little said there will be more
juggling after the All-Star break to accomplish that.
The manager said he did not feel the seven days' rest that Kuo had, because
of that juggling, contributed to his ineffective start against the Blue Jays.
"It was purely location," Little said. "I thought his stuff was OK. When you
mislocate to hitters like Frank Thomas, it's not a good practice. I'm
confident he'll be able to make that better."
Little said he had no problem bringing back Kuo on three days' rest.
"I figure his rest started early yesterday," he said.
Penny, with nine wins, will have three starts before the All-Star break. The
last Dodgers pitcher to have 12 wins at the break was Ramon Martinez, who was
12-3 at the break in 1991.
