Australia's Qantas is a step closer to a Sydney-London and Sydney-New York
non-stop service (known as 'Project Sunrise').

Airbus A350-900ULR (Ultra Long Range), a contender for the Australian flag
carrier's Project Sunrise, has begun a test program ahead of certification
and delivery to Singapore Airlines. The jet has larger fuel capacity and
larger winglets compared with the standard A350-900.

Airbus Commercial Aircraft president Guillaume Faury said the A350-900ULR
pushes the boundaries like no other aircraft. It will enable Singapore
Airlines to fly Singapore-New York non stop from the second half of 2018.

Qantas currently operates the world’s second-longest non-stop passenger
flight, Perth-London Heathrow using Boeing 787-9s.

Only Qatar Airways’ Auckland-Doha flight is longer.

Boeing hopes its in-development 777-8X also will be a contender for Project
Sunrise.
