THREE RIVERS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A former pastor of a church in Three
Rivers has been charged with criminal sexual conduct involving an 18-year-old
he had been counseling for years.
Police say multiple incidents happened inside the Three Rivers Bible Church,
where the suspect James Bailey was a pastor.
We obtained court documents which outline the interactions between Bailey and
the victim.
Former pastor James Bailey is accused of taking advantage of an 18-year-old
in April and May. Police say he'd been counseling the teen since 2014, when
she was only 16 years old. He was arrested Wednesday, and charged with six
counts of criminal sexual conduct.
Three Rivers Police say the incidents between Bailey and the victim happened
at the Three Rivers Bible Church after hours. Police believe the relationship
between the two was consensual, but since Bailey was her counselor, he was in
a position of authority and used that position to coerce the victim.
Court documents show the teen first reported to police about an incident in
April. And in May, her mother told police her daughter had sex with pastor
Bailey.
Documents also show on the night of May 19th, the alleged victim had suicidal
thoughts--cut her leg, and met Bailey at Three Rivers Bible Church. She says
Bailey suggested they meet there and told her to park a block away.
Inside the church, records show Bailey gave the teen a bottle of wine--which
she finished--and they had sex.
Police also recovered text messages between the two, with the teen stating
concern she had a sexually transmitted disease.
In the course of their investigation, officers also searched Bailey's
cellphone. His internet history shows he looked up the STD chlamydia.
Police say Bailey is now free on personal recognizance.
We went to Bailey's house to talk to him, but he declined to speak, closing
the door on us.
We spoke with church leaders who say they had no knowledge of the incidents,
and that Bailey left the church at the end of May.
They also tell us the victim was not a member of the church.
