The verb is first recorded 1601. inventory來自於L. inventus，其中它的字構是in-vent(come)，概念是finding that makes something coming，比方說invention發明。那為什麼inventory--存貨清單，跟find有關係呢，因為它的概念是"a list of what is found"而來的。 ps.1 如果你有讀一些經濟學、會計學的雜誌or書，會常常看到inventory (存貨)這個字唷， ps.2 invent v.發明 inventive a.發明的,創造的 census:population=inventory:merchandise 人口普查清查人口=貨物清單清查商品 breif review with 補充 (完整版 see p.13) ---------------------------------------- 字根 vert == turn 轉 vers vert 物理性的"轉向"(明喻) 轉向以避免：avert 轉向：divert 上下顛倒：invert 轉變想法傳達想法：advert 轉變信仰：convert 回覆舊信仰：revert verse 內心的反向反感的：averse 指事物方向順序的關係反對的：adverse 反向的：converse 反向的：inverse 反向的、背面的：reverse 相對的、正面的：obverse 不同、事物的多樣性 diverse 補充：概念上 converse = inverse = reverse [opposite or contrary in direction] 那差別在哪裡呢?我們先從obverse講起好了，這邊ob的字首指的是toward，所以obverse的意象就是turn toward to you，「轉向你」是也。什麼東東會轉向你呢？在古代的邏輯中就是"正面" 比方說人兩兩相對者看，不就是另外一個人的"正面"轉向你嗎。所以obverse指的就是正面，ex.銅幣的正面，or說正面者。 (再來，它也可以指某opinion, idea的對立面...就是因為這樣使這個複雜了許多，這樣一來，會出現obverse = reverse的錯覺，如果這兩個字都當成opposite arguement的話，你可以想成，obverse像是楚漢相爭，以河為界，而reverse像是光與影，有光的背後就是影子。...建議把下面的敘述全部看完，再來看這個括弧的內容) 那跟obverse相反的是什麼，就是reverse了。這邊的字首re-作back解釋，意像是turn back to you，所以reverse可以指銅幣的反面接著我們談inverse，它指的up side down的轉法。但要注意它用在比較抽象上的。比方說ratio的 inverse，或者是數學上function 的inverse，ex. tan-1(x) 最後是converse，它比較多用在理論theroem, 命題proposition上的相反。比方說宇宙最後會收縮的 converse theroem就是「宇宙最後不會收縮 or..」 (同時也可以說是 reverse theroem的唷，其實外國人不太會分別..) 但別忘記唷，converse也有「談話」的字義唷! ---------------------------------------- inverse in-verse(turn) adj.反逆的;反向的 [ reversed in position, order, direction, or tendency.] ex. inverse proportion = 成反比 ex. 1/x → x ex. tan(x) → tan-1(x) ex. AA-1= I invert in-vert(turn) v.使上下顛倒(實體的轉) [to turn upside down.] ex. If you invert "I can", you have "Can I?" 如果你把 I can 兩字前後轉換就成為 Can I?。 invertebrate in-vertebr(=vert)-ate adj.無脊椎的 [not vertebrate; without a backbone.] n. 無脊椎動物 (世界上有95%的動物是 invertebrate animal, ex. 毛毛蟲) n. 無骨氣的人 ps. vertebrate n.脊椎動物 adj.有脊椎的字源：verterbrate是由vertbra-ate來構成的，其中vertbra來自於L. verte(re)"turn"+ bra(suffix)，在古代人的觀念中能認為轉動(turn)是由於有關節(joint)的緣故，因此才會讓脊椎與轉扯上關係。 inveterate in-veter(old)-ate adj.根深蒂固的 [Firmly and long established; deep-rooted] ex. an inveterate smoker ex. an inveterate disease ps.veteran n.老兵美國的 veterans Day在 11月11日唷。另外，在遊戲中要選擇遊戲難度時， veteran的意思就是難等級 investigate in-vestige-ate v.調查 [to examine, study, or inquire into systematically; search or examine into the particulars of] ex. The prosecutors(檢察官) investigated the Chen's 'secret account'. ps. invest & investigater invest(投資)與這講的investigate是來自於不同字源的。我們先來看到investigage的字源：字構為in-vestige(遺蹟;殘餘)-ate，其中是來在vestige n.遺蹟;殘餘；在拉丁文中這個字指的是"footprint" 所以investigate才會有調查的字義，因為它要追尋footprint。再來，我們看到字型很像的invest，字構為in-vest，其中的 vest n.背心；在拉丁文中指的是"衣服cloth" 由"為...穿衣服"的概念形成"花費"、"投資"的字義。 invidious in-vid(see)-i-ous adj.招致不滿的 [Tending to rouse ill will, animosity, or resentment] ex.你可以用"顧人怨"來意會這個字。 ex. By asking me to comment my boss and coworks, you put me in an invidious situation. 字構：in-vid-ious "not want to look/ or look at with ill will" c.f in-vid-ious adj.招致不滿的 in-sid-ious adj.暗中危害的 invidious <> beneficial invigorate in-vigor(活力)-ate v.賦予活力 [to give vigor to; energize.] ex. Take a deep breath in to invigorate you. ps. 緯來電視台的英文就是vigor invigorating in-vigor-ating adj.活力充沛的 ex. ...the bright Finnish(芬蘭的) sun and invigorating northern air. inviolable in-viol(=violate)-able adj.不可褻瀆的[Secure from violation or profanation(瀆神)] adj.不可侵犯的 [ incapable of being violated; incorruptible; unassailable] ex.
