Important Information About Scoring the Computer-Based GRE General Test
The computer-based GRE General Test is different from a traditional paper and
pencil test. In a paper-and-pencil test, examinees receive the same set of
questions. An appropriate score can be determined simply by adding up the
number of questions answered correctly regardless of their difficulty.
The computer-based GRE General Test is an adaptive test that varies the
questions you receive to make a test that is tailored for a person at your
level of ability. Your score on this test depends on the entire pattern of
your answers, not just on the number you answered correctly. The contribution
of a question to your score depends on the following three factors: (1) the
power of the test question (as determined by data obtained from past
administrations) to distinguish between examinees at every level of ability,
(2) the level of difficulty of the test question, and (3) the probability
that a correct response for the question could have been guessed.
The test question's characteristics, as described by the three factors above,
are integrated in the ongoing estimation of your performance level. In
addition, as you proceed through the test, your answers to previous questions
are continually used to further refine your score estimate. Therefore, it is
entirely possible for two examinees who answer the same number of questions
correctly to receive different scores.
Your score also depends on how much of the test you completed. Poor time
management can result in an incomplete test or random guessing at the end of
a test. It is important that you pace yourself properly and use a reasonable
amount of time on each question rather than spending too much time on a few
questions and too little time on the remaining ones.
