[分享] Fiske WordPower
上次考GRE已經是2006 十月的事了 那時還沒這個版
慘不忍睹的Verbal成績也讓我申請到一家沒聽過學校的PhD w/TA ship
糊裡糊塗唸了後大嘆不如歸去 隨後展開一段odyssey in the US
最後總算換了學校安定下來

總覺得自己單字量遠遠落後身邊的美國同學 放暑假開始背單字
把老方以前寄的不擇手段背GRE單字印出來背
(GRE真是惡夢阿 我不想再考了)
跟我以前背紅寶書一樣鬼打牆 唸了一個禮拜還沒走出A
最近逛書店買了這本 Fiske WordPower by Edward B. Fiske

感覺編排得很有系統 依照同義字 主題 字源 字形幾個原則分門別類
一共有100章 舉例而言
Chapter 1 :Short word 三個字母組成的字群
ape dun fop gad hex ken poox sow vex vie
Chapter 2 : Putting together/ Taking apart 有關拆合的字群
amalgamation eclectic motley asunder diaspora cleave disseminate
Chapter 3: Down from Mount Olympus 希臘羅馬神話來源的字群
aphrodisiac chthonic hector hermetic junoesque mercurial
mnemonic muse saturine
此外 每個單字都有深入的解釋和例句
若有兩個以上不同解釋或用法 會分別附上對應的例句
例如
CLEAVE Interestingly, this verb has two opposite meanings. On the one
hand, it means ' to split' or 'to cut' or ' to penetrate.' The noun form
is 'cleft,' and the past tense is ' clove.' On the other hand, it means '
to stick to' or ' to be faithful to. ' In this case, the past tense is '
cleaved.'
Iago put a cleft in Othello's relationship with Desdemona by convincing
the Jealous Moor that she was engaging in an extramarital affair.
As the hurricane grew more forceful blowing over trees and knocking

書的封面寫可增進 SAT ACT的字彙量 僅一千個單字對GRE而顯然不足
但是它的同類字群編排方式有助於增進記憶的效率
