Year-End Greetings
Hello student
Dear Class:
New Year is right around the corner. I want to take this opportunity to let
you know that it is a pleasure to be your teacher for Asset Management this
semester. I hope that the marginal benefit of my lectures exceeded the cost.
The professorial-student relationship has changed dramatically in the
past few decades within many universities across Taiwan. The classroom has
too often become a data warehouse to prepare students for exams instead of
a place where minds are stretched. Moreover, many students today don't
approach their professors to discuss issues unrelated to class, except maybe
to obtain a reference (which is still usually related to class performance).
I want you to know that my door is always open (or, at least, usually),
my advice is free (although sometimes you get what you pay for), and the
conversation is always strictly confidential. Please do feel free to stop
by my office, especially when your new job seems to be getting the better
of you. Several of my previous students have stopped by my office to discuss
career-related issues as well as more major problems ranging from anxiety,
sleeping disorders, sexual abuse and HIV.
Let me close with a short thought that I think is probably quite applicable
to many students at National Taiwan University. Jesus of Nazareth said,
"Enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide, and the way is broad that
leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it. For the gate is
small, and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it.
" It was that outlook on life that dictated the "narrow" lives of Abraham
Lincoln, Martin L. King, Jr., Mother Theresa, and many more that accomplished
great things when they pursued a calling higher than money, material goods,
and physical attraction.
My wish for you is that you don't seek the easy way for your life. Instead, I hope that you challenge yourself, starting this upcoming year, by searching for truth and meaning. I am happy to help you in that endeavor.
