How will tennis cope when Roger goes?

How will tennis cope when Roger goes?
I heard a woman call in to a talkback radio show the other day.
Beryl from Gladstone Park, or something like that.
Something was annoying her and she was going to nip it in the bud. Right
there and then. There'd be no more discussion.
"I'm tired of everyone going on about how amazing Roger Federer is."
There was a pause, before the presenter replied... "Well, he is."
But Beryl wasn't finished.
"He is adored beyond reason and idolised to the detriment of other players."
It was safe to say she wasn't a Fed fan and will be quite happy when he
eventually retires.
It may bring Beryl some comfort to think that day will come some time in the
next four or five years.
I hope it does bring Beryl some comfort, because it certainly doesn't bring
any comfort to me, or to any of the hundreds of millions of people worldwide
who truly love the sport.
That day will be a black day.
Even if you don't like Federer, if you care about the sport, that day should
fill you with dread.
The day Federer retires, the sport will lose its biggest gem.
Tennis will still be popular, but not as popular.
Wimbledon will still be huge, but not as huge.
The loss of Roger Federer will leave a gaping hole in the sport.
For a start, tennis will lose the biggest statistical freak it's ever seen.
Roger Federer's record in the sport is on a par with Don Bradman's batting
average, if not better.
The most Grand Slam singles titles of any male, most finals, most
semi-finals, most weeks at number one...those feats are incredible in
themselves, but there are others that beggar belief.
After beating Jo Wilfried Tsonga in their quarter-final, Federer has now
reached ten consecutive semi-finals at the Australian Open.
Ten years in a row he's reached the last four.
His match against Tsonga was his 35th consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final.
Only five other men have even played the last 35 Grand Slams.
Rafa hasn't, Novak hasn't, Andy hasn't.
None of the players who have has won a single one.
That's eight years, almost nine years of making the last eight at every Grand
Slam.
No injuries, no illness, no early round upsets.
That's freakish.
As big a hole as he'll leave statistically, it's the one he'll leave
aesthetically that I'm more worried about.
No-one in the history of the sport has made the game look as pretty as
Federer does.
These days, the courts, the balls, everything has been slowed down.
The modern game is all about power, movement and endurance.
Federer shows there's still a place for elegance, shot-making, volleying.
When he goes, there'll be one fewer single-handed backhand - the most
beautiful of all shots.
Fewer rallies ended by an exquisite backhand drop volley.
Plenty of players move as quickly as Federer, quicker even, but none move as
beautifully.
The head barely moves, the feet dance.
Give Zinedine Zidane a racquet, or Mikhail Baryshnikov, and you have Roger
Federer.
Tennis is becoming paint by numbers. Federer is Monet.
Expressive, unexpected, inspired. Classical and avant garde at the same time.
And nothing sells tennis better than Federer.
He is the ultimate in marketability.
Rafa's popular, but not in the same ballpark as Federer.
The Swiss helps tennis compete for air time and column inches with the likes
of Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, David Beckham, Michael Schumacher and Lance
Armstrong.....oh wait, scrap that last one.
During a press conference the other day, Roger Federer was asked what he
would've been if he hadn't been a tennis player.
He said he'd probably have been a fairly average soccer player.
How happy would that have made Beryl? How much poorer would that have made
the world of sport?
