World No.15 Gilles Simon of France has been forced to withdraw
from Australian Open 2010 with a right knee injury.
The 25-year-old, a quarter-finalist at Melbourne Park in 2009,
was scheduled to play Frederico Gil of Portugal in his first round match.
Simon was in the same quarter of the draw as top seed Roger Federer,
Russian sixth seed Nikolay Davydenko, last year’s Australian Open
semi-finalist Fernando Verdasco, and Australian Lleyton Hewitt, the 22nd seed.
Simon has finished the last two years inside the top 15,
and has a career-high ranking of No.6 in January last year.
The right-hander was hoping to overcome the knee injury
that he sustained at last year’s French Open,
where he lost in the third round to Romanian Victor Hanescu.
