Honda have confirmed the two-time champion will take an initial five-place grid demotion for the use of a fifth energy store of the season. But they are "expecting further penalties for Fernando" once they finalise their engine component plan for the weekend after Friday's second practice session. Alonso will revert to using Honda's latest specification engine after problems with the unit following practice in Austria left him racing with an older unit last weekend. Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ on Wednesday, Alonso said he was still hoping for a points finish despite the impending penalty. "It's a home grand prix for the team. It's a place where we want to put a good result on Sunday," he said. "We will try to push hard, be in the points and put on a good show. Whatever the result at the end, it is a race where we enjoy attacking and racing so Silverstone is a perfect place." The high-speed, power hungry nature of Silverstone means McLaren-Honda were already expected to struggle at their home race due to the lack of performance in the Honda engine. But the MCL32 should be better suited for the Hungaroring and therefore the team wanted to avoid penalties in order to be more competitive at the Hungarian GP, which runs from July 28-30. "We will see how it goes tomorrow and then we will make a decision for Saturday. It will not change too much, a big penalty or a small penalty - maybe it is better to take a big penalty and arrive in Hungary with a little more safety," said Alonso. It is the second time this season that Alonso has received a grid penalty for exceeding engine limits, while Jenson Button was on the receiving end of a penalty when filling in for the Spaniard at the Monaco GP in May. At last month's Azerbaijan GP, Alonso received a 40-place grid penalty after a raft of engine component changes, although he finished ninth in the chaotic race to secure McLaren-Honda their only points of the season so far.
