Though EA has always been able to throw official kits, league licences and
surgically selected soundtracks at FIFA, Pro Evo has always been the critical
darling, relying on game design instead.
With FIFA 09, however, EA finally tipped the balance.
We spoke to FIFA's producer, David Rutter, chief engineer Gary Paterson and
vice president of EA Sports, Andrew Wilson, to find out how they reinvented
their vision of how football can be played through technology.
Elsewhere in the issue, a new look at Platinum Games' Bayonetta, which
director Hideki Kamiya claims can be played by your granny (provided she
doesn't mind playing as a hyper-violent witch with clothes made out of hair),
some extended time with Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising, and a sit-down
with the makers of Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion, who explain to us that the
downfall of the Japanese development industry began with the release of
Windows 95.
We also investigate how more and more games, such as Carnival Funfair Games and
COD4, continue selling long after release (a feature illustrated with new
classic games covers by Olly Moss), and ask when we can realistically expect
a new generation of console hardware.
