Most parts of MySQL are GPL'd. Anyone may use and extend the existing code 
that is under that license as long as they follow that license. As for 
"paid" employees, I don't know how they'd react if Oracle was to change 
licensing for "new" releases (go with the flow and continue to get paid -- 
or quit and work for free on GPL'd version).
