When the forth-implemented boot menu was introduced, the forth file displayed that menu alongside an ASCII picture of the BSD daemon [1] mascot which is commonly called "Beastie" [2]. Therefore that forth file got the name beastie.4th. Later the default changed to display "FreeBSD" in big letters instead of the BSD daemon. But Beastie is still there and can be enabled with an option. You can look at the beastie.4th file with a text editor.
