Actually, I only do a couple of binary filters. The first is at the MTA: I do what I can to decline to accept spam at that point. That takes care of 85 - 90% of the SMTP conversations my MTA receives. Mail that I see then gets categorized as either "spam" or otherwise, and if it's spam, I examine it to adjust the criteria for the first filter to reduce the probability that I'll ever see another such spam. (I also use similar criteria for a couple of other domains for which I'm postmaster.) The rest of the mail, I generally try to read and delete as fast as I can, first-in, first-out.
