[News] MOE increases number of Chinese universities w/ credits
The Ministry of Education is considering recognizing degrees and accepting
credits from over one hundred Chinese universities. That number is much
higher than what the ministry had said it was planning on prior to last
Saturday’s elections. DPP lawmakers are accusing the ministry of pandering
to China ahead of top-level cross-strait negotiations set to take place in
Taichung this month.
The Ministry of Education had announced plans to begin recognizing academic
credits and degrees from 41 top Chinese universities. But in a Monday
announcement that number suddenly grew to 112. The timing of the change
has led to speculation that the ministry was holding off the controversial
announcement until after last Saturday’s elections.
Lin Tsung-ming
Vice Minister of Education
Nothing has been settled. We still need to conduct a thorough evaluation,
says Vice Minister of Education Lin Tsung-ming.
DPP lawmakers are accusing the KMT of trying to satisfy China ahead of
this month’s cross-strait talks.
Kuan Bi-ling
DPP Legislator
The KMT is facing severe pressure from China. It has no choice but to submit.
The party especially feels the need for an achievement before the Chiang-Chen
meeting. So it took recognition of Chinese academic credits as its achievement
, says DPP Legislator Kuan Bi-ling.
The Ministry of Education plans to hold 17 public hearings across Taiwan
starting from Wednesday. The ministry hopes that it can stem controversy
by informing the public of its proposed plans to accept Chinese university
credits and allow Chinese students to study in Taiwan.
