What does the text "not exactly a first for Mario" mean?

The speaker is alluding to the well-known fact that Mario had already been
enormously original prior to Super Mario Kart. The effect of the use of
"exactly" is to show that to say that Mario Kart was 'not a first' is something
of an understatement.

So "exactly" in "not exactly a first" reduces the effect of 'not a first'.
The speaker tries to say it in a tactful way. Am I right?

難道jutfrank的意思不是這樣嗎？
還是說，這句要怎麼理解才對呢？
