The purpose of the current study was to examine
both dispositional (empathy and self-regulation)
and relational (quality of the parent – child relationship)
predictors of prosocial behavior toward strangers, friends,
and family, to examine whether a relational approach to
prosocial behavior (i.e., relationship centered motivators
of helpfulness) might add to existing conceptualizations of
prosocial development that focus primarily on dispositional
approaches (i.e., personality traits or tendencies that
motivate helpfulness).
