Improved labor relationships have structurally benefitted US automakers
One of the most critical structural changes has been the automakers’relationship
with its labor force. Through the UAW negotiations and agreements of 2007 and
2011 and the creation of a two-tiered pay structure, the domestic auto
manufacturers have dramatically reduced their hourly labor costs (GM, for
example, went from an average hourly labor cost of $78 in 2007 to $56 in
2011).
透過2007年及2011年UAW(United Auto Worker,汽車公會)的協商與協議,
"The Center for Automotive Research forecasts that for every 1% of GM and
Ford’s labor force that is comprised of lower-cost Tier 2 employees, there is a
$0.20-$0.24/hr savings."
根據The Center for Automotive Research的預估...

As the Detroit 3’s cost disadvantage disappears, competition heats up
Convergence of product cycles appears to be accelerating at the larger OEMs,
specifically as the Detroit Three have intensified focus on product after
massively rationalizing their cost structures. Historically there was a
tremendous discrepancy between the product cycles of US automakers versus
foreign competitors, but this gap has been largely closed.
"In the upcoming model years it appears that most OEMs should have average
showroom ages within the 2-3 year range with only slight outliers
on either end."
