The tumultuous days of the late Yuan, the theme of the fisherman symbolized
an escape from their strife-torn world. Wang Fu, a fellow townsman of Ni
Zan, had been a wanderer in exile. In this scroll he echoes Wu Zhen's
treatment of the fisherman theme. Poised between descriptive realism and
calligraphic abstraction, he's painting exemplifies how Ming, Qing scholar-
artists expressed themselves through the brush idioms of the Song, Yuan
masters.
