我拆成兩句看(因為and是連接詞)
1.It is possible to get some ideas of the mechanics of speech.
2.It is possible to get some ideas of what we call ....from books.
再來what 是所謂的複合關係代名詞=先行詞+關代(我覺得這聽起來有點複雜...)
或者直接想 what=the thing(s) that
所以第2句可以直接換為
It is possible to get some ideas of the things that we call....from books.
接下來that後面的東西就是名詞子句~
It=to get some ideas of....from books

另外,我覺得可以多看些文法書,增加對這些文法用字(先行詞、虛主詞..等)
的熟悉度,應該會對你教學生文法觀念的時候有所助益。
