我試著解釋看看，如果有錯還請各位指正！
※ 引述《firestu ()》之銘言：

在這裡which代表的是前面一整句話
(也就是he was educated at the local grammar school)
整句話的意思是說，
在讀完local grammar school後(所以which前面有個after)他就去Cambridge就讀了。
: a net with a hole at the bottom attached to a metal ring,
: through which the ball is thrown in basketball (/through).
: ^^^^^^^^^^^^^
這句話不知道有沒有打錯?
原本的句子可能應該是：
a net with a hole at the bottom attached to a metal ring,
through which the ball is thrown in the basket(而非basketball)
如果是這樣的話，
那麼which代表的是前面一句話的net(而前面那句話net後面都是在形容那個net)，
ball是被丟然後通過(through)那個net才被丟進basket裡的，
因此which前面有個through。
