In “The Unwisdom of Elites” (column, May 9), Paul Krugman cites the wars,
tax cuts that disproportionately benefit the rich, the recession and the
elites as contributing to our financial mess, but the common man is not
without responsibility.
At campaign stops in 2000, George W. Bush would brandish some cash and
promise ordinary people that a vote for him would be reciprocated in the form
of a tax break. The people wanted this, and after the election they placed
enough pressure on Democrats to make many of them think twice before voting
against tax cuts.
Until the common man lifts the sword of Damocles from the heads of
politicians wanting to raise taxes, the looming disaster will continue
percolating upward from the bottom.
