There are several genres in English writing, two of which I often
read are newspaper and manga. Newspaper, with easy access in every
convenience store, is literally a formal writing, while manga, substantially
proffered in numerous websites, is by contrast an informal writing.
The articles in newspaper tend to be divided in several paragraphs,
most of which are composed of just one sentence, some by applying participle
phrasing, others by appositives, and still others by interposing another
sentence quoted from another speaker. For example, in the daily paper
published on February 26, 2011, on the front page we can read “Lu was
skeptical of the process yesterday, saying it was not that easy for all the
DPP factions to discuss and coordinate and agree on a candidate.” While most
of the sentences in the newspaper are complex sentences, or even
compound-complex sentences, most of the sentences in manga are simple
sentences, such as “You are really a sharp guy, Hodi!” one quoted in
most-loved popular manga among people young and old “One Piece.” Sentences
in the newspaper are copious, verbose, and containing much to convey to its
reader; sentences in manga, on the other hand, are comparatively brief,
concise, and often conveying simply an idea, or even, an exclamation.
Second, the wording in the newspaper is more formal than that in manga.
In the newspaper, such a sentence as “How could they not enjoy the media
limelight,” in manga, you will read “How could they not enjoy the rush of
being stared at.” “She said both the Chineses Nationalist Party and the
Democratic Progressive Party, to which she belongs, mishandled the incident”
, in such a sentence in the newspaper, the word “mishandled” may be
replaced with “messed up.” Likewise, in still another sentence “Lu was
skeptical of the process yesterday” may probably be superseded in manga with
“The process yesterday looks fishy to Lu.” Such informal usages predominate
manga, which poses a conspicuous difference from those in the newspaper.
Last, sentences in the newspaper prone to be inserted as much
information about the subject in question; the phenomenon as such is hardly
seen in manga. In newspaper, for instance, a sentence like “Lu, who was former
president Chen Shui-bian’s running mate in 2000 and 2004, said she was
prompted to enter the campaign,” may be paraphrased in manga as “Lu was
former president Chen Shui-bian’s running mate in 2000 and 2004. She said
she was promped to enter the campaign.” In other words, newspaper shows
manifest proclivity towards usages of inserting as much information in one
sentence than manga.
As newspaper is a means of written mass media, its wording is formal,
lengthy, and informative. Manga, in comparison to newspaper, is rather
informal, terse, and, with its main purpose of arousing readers interest,
senseless.
謝謝有耐心看完的人~^^
