[心得] 看摩登家庭學英文_Modern Family S01E14

本集仍然是三線式的故事發展,Claire 和以前的同事敘舊,想向同事炫耀她擁有一
個幸福的家庭,沒想到家中卻是一團亂:Haley和Dylan鬧分手;Alex 為了幫助非洲小孩
蓋一所學校,收集一大堆酒瓶回家,但把老鼠也帶回家了;Phil 被卡在流動廁所裡面,
還在臉上黏了一個假鬍子。 Cam 和 Jay一起去健身房比賽壁球,Jay 卻因為 Cam 是
gay 而在更衣室裡面鬧出尷尬事件;Mitch 答應幫助 Gloria 處理車禍糾紛,但後來發現
一切都是 Gloria 的錯,Mitch 只好成為告訴 Gloria 她開車技術很爛的罪人。
cubicle (n.) 隔板
a small part of room that is separated from the rest of the room:
a shower cubicle | office workers in their cubicles.
pumps (n.) 包頭淑女鞋
a woman’s plain shoe with no buckles,laces etc: a pair of leather pumpsㄡ
Claire: I had a little cubicle, and I wore my tennis shoes to work and
changed into my work pumps.
grizzled (adj.) 灰白的
literally having grey or greyish hair.
Cam: There he is-the steely, grizzled veteran ready to do battle with the
plucky upstart.
plague (n.) 瘟疫
a disease that causes death and spread quickly to a large number of people:
drops in population levels due to plagues and famines.
Jay: I have been avoiding this day like a plague.
get cold feet 膽怯(隨著事情越接近而越猶豫、膽怯)
to suddenly become too frightened to do something you had planned to do,
especially something important like getting married.
Barbara: The wife’s getting cold feet.
the trenches 職場
the place or situation where most of the work or action in a activity takes
place: Lane left teaching after 30 years in the trenches.
Claire: How’s life in the trenches?
covet (v.) 渴望
(formal) to have a very strong desire to have something that someone else has.
Claire: The thought if Valerie getting the one job in the whole company that
everyone coveted, well, I wasn’t a “Lover " of that.
frat house=fraternity house 兄弟會的房子(就是電影惡鄰纏身裡面的那種!)
a house used as a residence by a chapter of a fraternity
fraternity (n.) 兄弟會
a club at an American college or university that has only male members.
Phil: You wake up in a frat house with a bad reputation.
I.M.=instant messaging 即時通訊
Haley: I thought I I.M.ed you to stay away.
wonky (adj) 靠不住的、不穩的
(informal) unsteady or not straight or level: a wonky table
Claire: And it seems like thing have gotten a little wonky around here.
booze (n.) 酒
informal alcoholic drink, on the booze– He has been on the booze(=drinking
too much alcohol) for five days.
drench (v.) 使濕透
to make something or someone extremely wet.
fornicate (v.)
a word meaning have sex who you are not marry to-used to show strong
disapproval.
Claire: A bunch of booze-drenched hill people and fornicating in the
stairwell.
compose oneself 自我沈澱
to try hard to become calm after feeling very angry, upset, or excited.
Phil: I’d be willing to bet she’s just composing herself.
petty (adj.) 記仇的
unkind and caring too much about small unimportant things: petty jealously
and spitefulness
Claire: They could have been petty.
§摩登家庭小趣聞:飾演 Mitchell 的 Jesse Tyler Ferguson 最早是在百老匯發跡的,
即使這幾年他投入大量時間在 Mitchell 這個角色上,每一年他都還是會到百老匯演一兩
個月的舞台劇,今年他演的是舞台劇名稱叫 Fully committed ,是一齣有趣的喜劇,在
這邊附上一個短片讓大家看看 Jesse Tyler Ferguson 舞台上的演技,真的相當具有戲劇
張力耶!
