My VAIO VGN-Z51XG runs SMP now with your diff. Without APIC_IO, however.
With APIC_IO, I get a "APIC_IO: Cannot route 8254 interrupt to CPU"
panic (no usable trace, though).
But all in all you just made my day. :)
