After booting the kernel, you should have a new tree kern.polling to
activate and tune the configuration. First of all kern.polling.enable=1
starts the whole beasts :)
Otherwise the general advise, if possible, just add a PCI NIC. vr(4) is
the worst crap EVER created. Yes, it is still a worse than Realtek.
