ROUND 2 (68): Dan Vogelbach, 1B (Bishop Verot HS - Ft. Myers, FL)
L/R, 6'0, 250, 18 years old
COMMENT: Rated by Baseball America as the #109 best player and the #3 best HS
power hitter in 2011 draft... Hit 508-ft HR (with metal bat) at the Power
Showcase in December... Hit 17 HR in 32 games leading his HS team to 2011
Florida 3-A state championship... Weighed 280+ a year ago but lost 30+ pounds
over past year... Signed NLI with U. of Florida...
BA:
Vogelbach is not a good runner, but he helped Bishop Verot win the Florida 3-A
championship for the first time since 1994 when he scampered home from second
base with the winning run on a deflected single by Hudson Boyd—a likely
top-two-rounds pick as a pitcher. Vogelbach hit 17 homers in 32 games and has
some of the best lefthanded power in the draft due to excellent strength and a
sound, loose swing. He put it on display last December at the annual Power
Showcase—the event made famous by Bryce Harper's 502-foot homer—by launching
one 508 feet with a metal bat and won the event. He is more than a masher, with
solid hitting ability and a fairly polished approach. But at 6 feet, 240
pounds, Vogelbach has work to do physically and will never be thought of as
athletic. He has trimmed up in the last year, particularly since last summer's
East Coast Pro Showcase, when he weighed more than 280 pounds. Vogelbach is
limited to first base and may be limited to the American League, but he may hit
his way into the firs three rounds. He's committed to Florida.

ROUND 3 (98): Zeke DeVoss, 2B-CF (U. of Miami)
B/R, 5'10, 175, 20 years old
COMMENT: Draft-eligible sophomore... Less-polished than your typical D-1
college player... Batted lead-off and hit 340/491/456 with 32 SB (10 CS) and
57 BB/30 K in 291 PA and 61 games for the Hurricanes in 2011... Gap hitter
with plus-speed... Versatile athletic player... Played SS in HS and was moved
to 2B at "The U.," but probably projects as a CF in pro ball... Drafted out
of HS in 38th round of 2009 draft by Red Sox but did not sign...
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
ROUND 4 (129): Tony Zych, RHP (U. of Louisville)
R/R, 6'3, 190, 20 years old
COMMENT: College junior... Was selected by Cubs in 46th round of 2008 draft
out of St. Rita HS in Chicago but did not sign... Rated the 50th best
prospect in 2011 draft by Baseball America... One of the top closers in
college baseball, was voted the #1 prospect in Cape Cod League in 2010 when
he led league with 12 saves... Had 13 saves for Louisville in 2011...
Two-pitch pitcher... Throws 94-97 MPH fastball that tops out at 99 and a
mid-80's slider... Good hitter and fielder, he also played some infield for
the Cardinals in prior seasons...
BA:
Zych led the Cape Cod League with 12 saves last summer, when scouts voted him
the circuit's top prospect after he dealt 97 mph fastballs during the all-star
game. After using him sporadically as a starter in his first two seasons,
Louisville has kept him in the bullpen this spring and he has thrived. He has
worked at 94-97 mph all season, with a high of 99. His fastball gets on hitters
quickly thanks to some funk in his delivery. Zych's arm action isn't pretty and
puts some stress on his shoulder, but it adds to his deception and doesn't
hamper his control. He's an athletic 6-foot-3, 188-pounder whom the Cardinals
recruited as a two-way player who could contribute in the middle infield, where
he saw some action as a freshman. Zych has the mental toughness to handle
late-inning assignments and shouldn't require much time in the minors. Whether
he becomes a closer or set-up man depends on how consistent his mid-80s slider
becomes. He doesn't miss as many bats as he should because his fastball can get
straight and his slider can flatten out.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
ROUND 14 (429): Dillon Maples, RHP (Pinecrest HS - Southern Pines, NC)
R/R, 6'3, 205, 19 years old
COMMENT: 2011 Gatorade North Carolina HS Player of the Year... Two-way player
(RHP/3B)... Went 9-1 with 0.92 ERA and 143 K in 68.2 IP on the mound... Also
hit 431 with 7 HR as 3B... Member of USA Junior National Team... Signed NLI
with U. of North Carolina...
BA:
Maples has had the benefit of professional insight. His father, Tim, was a
second-round pick of the Orioles in 1979, and his pitching coach at Pinecrest
is James Baldwin, the former White Sox all-star. Scouts got a good look at
Maples during his junior season when they went to see Baldwin's son, outfielder
James Baldwin III, who signed with the Dodgers as a fourth-rounder. Maples'
best assets are athleticism and arm strength. Also a standout kicker on the
football team, he stands at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds with a strong lower half. His
fastball sits 91-94 mph and has touched the mid-90s throughout the season. His
curveball is an above-average pitch that has left his competition in the state
overmatched. He lacks command of his fastball and actually does a better job of
spotting his curveball. He has shown a changeup in warm-ups but doesn't need it
in games, so the pitch will need development. Maples has a short arm action and
questionable mechanics that lead to his below-average command. Scouts say his
athleticism will allow him to make the necessary adjustments. He is committed
to North Carolina, where he would play baseball and have a chance to walk on as
a kicker for the football team.

The Cubs' best move would be to let all 29 teams to know Zambrano is
available in the right deal. Although he has a complete no-trade clause, the
time is right for Zambrano to move on. As a friend of Zambrano's said to me
on Sunday, "At this point Carlos would probably let the Cubs trade him to
Siberia."
The New York Yankees are the right team for Zambrano. He likes the big stage,
and he has former pitching coach Larry Rothschild there to make the
transition as seamless as possible. Rothschild was Cubs pitching coach for
nine seasons and for most of those years he got the best out of Zambrano.
In return the Cubs could ask for pitcher Joba Chamberlain or outfielder Brett
Gardner along with some good minor league talent. The Cubs owe Zambrano
roughly $30 million over the next year and 2/3 of his contract. For the
Yankees, that's chump change. The Steinbrenner family wouldn't think twice
about spending that kind of money on a quality arm that could help them beat
the Boston Red Sox.
The Yankees scouted Cubs pitching all spring, mostly concentrating on Carlos
Silva, whom they eventually signed to a minor league contract after he was
released by the Cubs. It won't take the Yankees or any of the other big
market teams long to start sniffing around Clark and Addison.
For the good of the Cubs and for Zambrano, it's time for him to move on for a
parade of good young talent.
