Hitless wonders waste sterling start by Wells
Randy Wells is all but guaranteed of being in one of the most intriguing races
down the stretch in September.
Whether his Cubs teammates are also playing for something by then is the $140
million question for this team after its 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on
Friday night.
Despite another exceptional start for Wells in what has become a Rookie of the
Year bid, the Cubs found another way to lose during this ugly West Coast trip
and missed a rare opportunity to regain ground in the National League Central
and NL wild-card races.
Similar to recent losses, they didn't hit again: Randy Wolf and the Los Angeles
bullpen combined on a one-hitter.
''It gets painful watching this,'' manager Lou Piniella said. ''That's a good
word for it: painful.''

Echoing Piniella's sentiments, shortstop Ryan Theriot said, ''It's hard to be
out there playing sometimes.''

Wells (9-6) pitched what should have been scoreless Baseball -- good enough for
a win, if not for a fielding error by Aramis Ramirez in the second inning that
led to a pair of unearned runs. It sent the Cubs reeling to their 11th loss in
15 games with another two left at Dodger Stadium on this 1-4 road trip.
For Wells, the loss ruined his bid to become the first Cubs rookie to win 10
games since Kerry Wood in 1998. But Wells has bigger things on his mind.
Wells
''When they give me the ball, I try to go out there and win a ballgame,'' he
said. ''That's it. I don't care about ERAs, I don't care about personal
accolades.''
Wells:
Even when he thinks more personally, it's about earning his place.
''I'm just trying to prove that I'm worthy and prove that I can stay up here
and pitch up here,'' he said.
Nonetheless, he has pitched well enough late enough in the season that he
reluctantly admits to occasionally take a glance at what some of the other
rookies are doing.
''I try not to,'' he said, ''but you can't help but look at guys like J.A. Happ
-- in my mind he's going to run away with this thing.''
Not necessarily.
lead in wins and rank 1-2 in rookie ERA.
Atlanta's Tommy Hanson -- who, like Happ and Wells, started the season in the
minors -- was 8-2 with the third-best rookie ERA (3.05) in just 13 starts.
''There's so many guys having good years,'' Wells said, ''so many guys vying
for that award. But at the end of the year, whatever happens happens. You can't
pitch trying to win a Rookie of the Year award.''
If Wells finishes strong in what figures to be eight more starts this season
and joins 2008 winner Geovany Soto as a ROY winner, it would give the Cubs
back-to-back winners for the first time since Billy Williams and Ken Hubbs in
1961-62.
FIRST AND 10
Randy Wells was trying Friday to join a short list of Cubs rookies who have won
at least 10 games in the last 40 years:
Year Record Starts IP ERA
Burt Hooton 1972 11-14 31 218.1 2.80
Mike Harkey 1990 12-6 27 173.2 3.26
Geremi Gonzalez 1997 11-9 23 144 4.25
Kerry Wood* 1998 13-6 26 166.2 3.40
*-Won NL Rookie of the Year (Harkey finished fifth; Gonzalez ninth).
