重要的是有沒有足夠且有意義的data
發明RC公式的Bill James後來發現負責MLB比賽紀錄統計的the Elias Sports
Bureau無法提供(or不肯提供)更詳細的資料
於是與其他同夥開了一家公司 Stats, Inc.
STATS, Inc. began collecting MLB play-by-play in 1987 and has digitized
the statistical history of America's Pastime back to 1876. In 2002,
STATS, Inc. also added pitch type, velocity and location (TVL) to its MLB
data collection.
在early 1980, MLB的比賽紀錄還沒有提供投手在比賽的總用球數
Stats Inc.開始紀錄the pitch count at the end of at bats, pitch types and
locations, the direction and the distance of batted balls.
並將field劃分成26個區域來紀錄野手接到球的位置
但是MLB球隊的人是怎麼看這些統計數據呢?
後來他們把統計出來的資料告訴White Sox GM,"Hey! Frank Thomas 守一壘時的打
擊比當DH時好70 points"(<-應該就是0.07吧?) 不過沒有人在乎
當Astros 主場Atrodome改建, 打算要把fences往前移時,
Astro's GM, Al Rosen,問Stats Inc.在more hitter-friendly球場
對他們球隊的影響是好是壞
Stats Inc. showed the relative propensity of the Astros versus their
opponents to hit long pop flies並告訴Rosen
"Sorry, if you do that, you lose more games".....
Astro's GM 第一個反應不是考慮球場是否取消改建,
而是...."OMG,絕不能讓這個資料公開, 如果我的投手知道,那該怎麼辦~"
