Gibson 'monster' game for Bulls
Playing heavy minutes for Boozer, he scores 13 points with 11 rebounds
ATLANTA — The final statistics showed a 3 minute, 56 seconds difference
between Taj Gibson and starter Carlos Boozer in terms of playing time.
Yet there was no reason to read too much into the disparity in Gibson's
favor. In Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau's mind, it wasn't an indictment of
Boozer's recent play. And it had nothing to do with how Boozer's ailing right
big toe was feeling Friday night.
"Just because (Taj) was playing so well and that unit was playing so well,''
Thibodeau said, referring to energy Gibson and the rest of the bench
provided. "That's why we did that.''
Not to mention the Bulls held a double-digit lead for most of the second half
in a 99-82 Game 3 thumping of the Hawks, allowing even Derrick Rose to get a
little rest during a 44-point night in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Thibodeau acknowledged the need to give Gibson more minutes even before Game
3 tipped off. In almost 26 minutes — his most extensive action since he
played 30 minutes in Game 1 versus the Pacers — Gibson scored 13 points on 5
of 9 shooting to go with 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.
"Basically just fed off the energy that guys started to play with," Gibson
said. "Played solid defense early. Couple of tip-ins. Just played with a lot
of confidence.''
Gibson had one fan, in particular, cheering him on — Boozer.
"Monster. Great player,'' Boozer said of Gibson. "We were riding with him, up
by 20.''
Boozer had just six points on 3 of 6 shooting and six rebounds in 22-plus
minutes. But he showed little regard for his ailing right big toe and sore
left ankle when he smashed a left-handed dunk over Josh Smith. Boozer was
whistled for an offensive foul, but it meant something to Thibodeau.
"I thought Carlos played very well,'' Thibodeau said. "I thought he attacked
and was real aggressive early. I love the way he went to the basket on that
offensive foul.''
Boozer admitted the pain continued to shoot through his toe Friday night. He
just ignored it.
"I felt great man,'' Boozer man. "I'm just going to keep ballin', baby. All
that matters is that we win. My toe probably will get better in August.''
