FA Youth Cup final report: Chelsea 2 Man City 1 (5-2 on agg)
Mon 27 Apr 2015
Chelsea continued our recent FA Youth Cup dominance by lifting the trophy
for the second year in a row and the fourth time in six seasons. It is the
second occasion the club has retained the crown after back-to-back
successes in 1960 and 1961.
The Blues carried a 3-1 first-leg advantage into Monday evening's Stamford
Bridge meeting but saw their aggregate advantage halved early on as
Kelechi Iheanacho put Manchester City ahead.
The visitors' lead on the night lasted just 13 minutes as Izzy Brown's
header found the back of the net, before Tammy Abraham extended the
aggregate lead to three goals in the opening minute of the second period
with a precise finish. After that the tie was seen out comfortably.
== Team news ==
Under-18s manager Joe Edwards made just one change from the first leg as
Jeremie Boga replaced Ruben Sammut in the side. Boga started in the number
10 midfield role in front of captain Charlie Colkett and Charly Musonda in
midfield.
Dominic Solanke led the line up front supported from out wide by Abraham
and Brown, while the back five remained unchanged with Bradley Collins in
goal protected by Ola Aina, Fikayo Tomori, Jake Clarke-Salter and Jay
Dasilva.
Man City made two changes from the first leg last week in Manchester as
Marcus Wood and Iheanacho replaced Manuel Garcia and Isaac
Buckley-Ricketts.
== First half ==
As in the first leg a week previously, it was a lively start at the Bridge
with two goals inside the opening 20 minutes. City halved the deficit in
the final early on with their first meaningful attack. Aaron Nemane used
his pace to escape down the right and whipped in a dangerous cross that
striker Kelechi Iheanacho poked in beyond Collins.
The young Blues responded well and threatened with a series of crosses
into the box and set-piece deliveries. It was from the latter that they
levelled as Colkett's in-swinging corner was met by Brown and the
forward's thumping header flew past a despairing attempt at a clearance on
the line from Bersant Celina.
Chances continued to be carved at both ends in an open start as Boga had a
powerful shot blocked well by Tosin Adarabioyo, and then Collins made an
excellent save down low to his left to push Iheanacho's header away from
danger.
Iheanacho brought a routine save from Collins before Celina fired wide
from a good position 20 yards out after the visitors had won possession
high up the field. Jason Wilcox's side were growing stronger as the half
wore on and Collins saved again, this time from Barker, after Tomori's
sliding challenge had come back off the winger.
Down the other end, Colkett fashioned a sight at goal with a neat turn in
the box as he received a pass from Abraham. His close-range effort was
blocked and Solanke's low drive narrowly missed the target in the final
minute of the half.
== Second half ==
The Blues landed a killer punch within a minute of the restart as they
stretched the aggregate advantage to three. Abraham fired a warning shot
over the bar after seven seconds before he found the back of the net
moments later.
Solanke picked up the ball from Brown, found the forward's run from the
right wing and Abraham did the rest as he guided his shot into the far
corner for his 39th goal of the season in all competitions.
Abraham arrowed a shot over from a tight angle before Clarke-Salter headed
inches wide from a corner as the Cup holders took control of the game.
Solanke would have got on the end of Abraham's low cross but for
goalkeeper Kjetil Haug's intervention.
City did manage to get the ball in the back of the net again after 75
minutes but substitute Buckley-Ricketts's header was ruled out for a push
on Clarke-Salter, and the hosts were able to keep a good shape and
threaten on the break for the remainder of the game.
Substitute Ruben Sammut went close on one such counter-attack, picking the
ball up from Solanke and striking a shot inches wide of the far post. That
proved to be the evening's final action as Edwards and his players
celebrated another merited win and memorable night for the Academy.
