Under-18s report: Chelsea 12 Aston Villa 2
Sat, 11 Oct 2014
Our Under-18s won an incredible league encounter at Cobham this lunchtime
(Saturday) to maintain their place at the top of the South Group table.
Chelsea were 2-0 down after a quarter of an hour following strikes from
Harry McKirdy and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy, however Jeremie Boga quickly
pulled one back and that kick-started an amazing comeback.
Tammy Abraham, substitute Miro Muheim and a second from Boga swung the
game back in Chelsea's favour, before Dominic Solanke added two goals in
first-half stoppage time to make it 6-2 at the interval. Muheim completed
his hat-trick with two confident finishes early in the second half, before
Scott found the net from range after an hour.
Boga completed his hat-trick with a brilliant free-kick finish, Abraham
scored his second and substitute Ike Ugbo got in on the act with a goal
too as the young Blues rounded off a special day in emphatic fashion.
== Team news ==
There were three changes from the side that won 2-1 at Norwich City last
weekend as Under-18s manager Joe Edwards was able to call upon the
services of two forwards usually with the Under-21s in Solanke and Boga.
They joined Abraham in attack, while Scott, Isaac Christie-Davies and
Mukhtar Ali comprised the midfield trio in behind.
Ruben Sammut continued in the side as the only ever-present in this term's
league campaign, partnering skipper Jake Clarke-Salter in the heart of
defence. Jay Dasilva and Charlie Wakefield started at left-back and
right-back respectively, while Under-16 Jared Thompson continued in goal.
== First half ==
An open start in the Cobham sunshine saw chances created at both ends and
three goals on the scoreboard after a quarter of an hour. Rushian
Hepburn-Murphy fired narrowly wide for the visitors and then forced a good
low block from Clarke-Salter, before the visitors grabbed the opener after
11 minutes. An advance down the right channel brought progress and McKirdy
was on hand to swivel neatly and poke the loose ball beyond Thompson to
give his side an early advantage.
Chelsea pushed forward immediately looking for a leveller, with Solanke
denied by a strong block and then heading over from close range, however
it was Villa celebrating again after 15 minutes as they doubled their
lead. Hepburn-Murphy charged down Clarke-Salter's clearance and the
rebound fell invitingly into his path. He advanced into the box and kept
his composure to finish confidently beyond Thompson.
That blow spurred the league leaders into a quick response and the deficit
was halved within a minute as Boga fashioned an opportunity for himself to
shoot at goal and fired beyond Dylan Forth in the Villa goal from the edge
of the box. It was a boost that set the scene for a crazy comeback inside
the opening half hour that was defined by two goals in a few minutes.
Solanke advanced down the left channel and supplied a brilliant low centre
across goal that Abraham poked home from a couple of yards for his 13th of
the season.
That levelled the scores before a flowing move from Edwards' side resulted
in them going ahead for the first time in the match.
Ali released Abraham through the middle, receiving a late tackle in the
process that would end his involvement in the match, and the forward
looked to have netted again as he bent a low effort towards goal but it
struck the base of the post. Boga was on hand to react quickest and fired
the rebound into the far corner for his second goal of the morning.
Muheim replaced the injured Ali and was involved in much of the action for
the remainder of the half. The Swiss youth international first fired wide
from 20 yards before finding the net in the 42nd minute as he profited
from more excellent work from Abraham and a delightful dinked cross from
the right to nod beyond a stranded Forth.
That wasn't the end of the first half action either as further incisive
attacking from the hosts brought about two more goals in stoppage time.
First, Abraham turned provider from the right as Solanke received his low
cross and fired into the roof of the net, before Solanke steered Muheim's
free-kick beyond Forth to make the half-time scoreline 6-2.
== Second half ==
McKirdy went close to reducing the visitors' deficit eight minutes after
the restart as he escaped in behind Thompson and aimed towards goal at a
tight angle, however his effort trickled onto the far post and substitute
Alex Prosser was unable to convert the rebound.
The Blues quickly made Villa regret that moment more as Muheim scored two
goals in six minutes.
An emphatic finish after a neat attack was followed by a hat-trick goal as
Dasilva's powerful driven centre was only palmed into Muheim's path by
keeper Forth, with the midfielder finishing high and with confidence.
The driving rain that arrived for the second period only added to the
crazy nature of affairs and Chelsea had a ninth goal in the 63rd minute as
Scott's effort from distance arrowed towards goal and beat Forth with the
aid of a deflection from Hale.
A 10th goal was notched up in the 73rd minute after Chelsea were awarded a
free-kick on the edge of the penalty area after Abraham was felled. Boga
stepped up and bent a brilliant effort over the wall and into the far
corner to complete his hat-trick.
Abraham added his second of the game with a brilliant turn and finish from
10 yards, and substitute Ugbo found the back of the net in the final
minute with a sublime chipped finish over the onrushing Forth to round
off an unforgettable win for the youth team.
Next up for the Under-18s is a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion next
Saturday 18 October.
== Manager Reaction ==
Edwards spoke after the game of his pride in his players' involvement in a
memorable win and highlighted the attacking talent as instrumental in the
big scoreline, however he also focused on another slow start as a pressing
area in which to improve. Speaking to the official Chelsea website, he
said: 'It's great for all the boys to be involved in that.
'We've been able to add two players in Jeremie and Dominic to a team
that's already been doing very well so we knew we were fielding a strong
team and the expectation from ourselves rises as a result of that. We're
disappointed with the start and it's something we have to keep looking at
because it's happened a few times lately, with us giving teams a
head-start in games - but the most pleasing aspect today was our mentality.
'When you go in at half-time with such a clear lead there's always a
chance the players will take their foot off the gas in the second half but
we addressed that at the break and spoke about how the top-level players
are so relentless and ruthless in those situations. You could see in the
second half the boys responded to that and we managed to double our
half-time score because of it.
'There were some really good individual performances; Jeremie was looking
forward to getting a run-out after missing a few games with illness so it
was good for him to be involved and get a few goals, while Kyle Scott was
a real key player for us today. We changed his role to a deeper one and we
really wanted him to dictate the game when we had the ball. He was
outstanding in doing that and it was good to see him perform like that in
a different role.'
Edwards also spoke of the development side of the match, with a few
players deployed in slightly unfamiliar positions, and praised his side's
form after an impressive few results.
'It's all part of development to see players in different areas of the
field and we're working with Charlie Wakefield on the other side of his
game, working off the ball as a wide player. Sometimes, the best way to
improve defensively is to play in defence and he did really well today.
Ruben Sammut has always given us versatility to come in and play in the
back; he understands the game so well and played really well.
'We've had a couple of different wins in recent weeks, winning at Spurs
and then at Norwich when we didn't play as well as we know we can. I've
seen the boys speaking a lot recently about the league and you can see how
important it is for them this year. In previous seasons we haven't always
been able to field a settled team week after week at youth level, however
with this intake of 14 first-years we can do that this year.
'You can see there's a determination to accumulate the league points and
pick up the wins at difficult places like Tottenham and Norwich. Winning
games when you're not having your best day is part of being a top player
and a top team so it's certainly been a pleasing few weeks for us.'
