just-loves-the-ride-8502601.html

As far as starting a new career in coaching goes, one could forgive
Boudewijn Zenden if he felt some regret about making Chelsea his first
port of call.
Zenden accepted the role of becoming Rafael Benitez's assistant following
the sacking of crowd favourite Roberto Di Matteo as manager in November
and to say it has not been an easy journey since then would be an
understatement.
The 36-year-old knows all about how high profile Chelsea can be in the
media from his time as a player at Stamford Bridge between 2001-4, but the
scrutiny has seemingly grown in intensity with each year owner Roman
Abramovich has been at the club following his arrival a decade ago.
But it could be argued that the past three months have been the toughest
of the lot with results going against the team and perhaps more
significantly, the fans going against Benitez. There have even been some
whispers of ill content aimed from the stands toward the club's wealthy
benefactor.
One would assume it might have been reason enough for even a man of
Zenden's vast playing experience – he also played for Barcelona and
Liverpool – to have had second thoughts about the wisdom of taking the
position at all.
But in his first interview since he took the job, Zenden is far from
negative about the situation. In fact, the former Dutch international
feels being at Chelsea has provided the perfect learning experience and
doesn't want it to end any time soon.
He told Standard Sport: “For me it's a great opportunity to be at a club
like Chelsea, to be asked to do this job.
“I'm very much enjoying it. The good thing for me is that I get a chance
to literally be involved in everything, when we do the game analysis,
preparing for matches with the video analysis, training sessions, so I'm
in every side of it and it suits me well.
“I like it that way. I'm not focussed on just one part of the whole
thing, I have a finger in a lot of pies.
“It's my first steps in a coaching role and I'm looking forward to what
the future holds for me. It could be anything, but as it stands I have
signed my contract with Chelsea until the end of the season and we'll take
it from there.”
Whether Zenden gets the chance to extend his stay beyond May remains to be
seen, but if the supporters had their way, the man that hired him would
have been handed his P45 long ago.
When Chelsea had some struggles during Zenden's time at the club as a
player, there was no sign of any backlash against then coach Claudio
Ranieri.
The same can't be said for Benitez, who was booed when he took charge of
his first game against Manchester City and has been the subject of abusive
chants ever since.
It has been a challenge that Zenden would not have expected on his
coaching debut, but the former winger is adamant the negative vibe from
what he insists is 'a minority' can still be turned around.
He added: “The situation that occurred has not always been easy, but we
know that when the results are there and you do well, everything will be
changing for the better and be ok.
“If we do four, five, six good things and one bad, it seems that the one
thing that is bad is measured in a much bigger scale than the five or six
things that happened before that.
“For the managing department it is just a matter of getting on with the
work and making sure you get the results. The only thing you hope for is
that you get some support from the fans and everybody else because in the
end that is what will help the team.
“I'm sure it is just a minor group that thinks differently. It is just a
matter of time that there is maybe a change to a more positive energy.
“It's not always been negative. The fans in general are very good. In
general they support the team, the players and the manager. There is
always a minority that you still need to try and convince.
“It's important to support the team. If it comes to the situation where
the players feel more pressure than is needed, that's not good for anybody
at the club is it?”
Benitez may have his faults in the eyes of the supporters, but a lack of
fortitude in the face of all this animosity can't be considered among
them.
When asked if he has seen the criticism ever get to the former Liverpool
coach behind closed doors, Zenden added: “No. For us the most important
thing is to prepare well and try and win the next game. That doesn't
change the situation.
“The good thing is we have a game every three days so there is not much
time to look back or forward. They come quick and fast and we like it that
way, but for the players it's a lot of games.”
If they continue their run in the Europa League – they play the second
leg of their last 32 tie against Sparta Prague at home tonight, and
successfully defend the FA Cup they won last year, it will actually set a
new record high of 69 games that Chelsea have played in one season
(beating the 64 played in 2006-7).
But Zenden wouldn't have it any other way, especially as it would give
everyone at the club, from Benitez to the supporters, a reason to
celebrate.
“There is still so much to play for and to look forward to,” he said.
“Trophies are always the main target and we want to make sure we win both
the FA Cup and Europa League. We knew it wasn't going to be easy against
Sparta, but we got a good result (won 1-0) to take into this season leg
tomorrow.
“It's also important to get used to the new competition. The boys are
used to playing in the Champions League, so when you play in a different
competition it is important you get all the heads together and focus
again on a new target.
“The fact that the boys went out (of the Champions League) earlier on
always has a bit of an influence on the players, but you have to pick
yourselves up and make sure you're up for the next challenge.
“It's still a great competition and another trophy the club haven't won
yet so it's a good one to put in the cabinet. That's the way you have to
look at it and I'm sure the boys are aware of that as well.”
