In an interview for a new book by sports journalist Ian Ridley, Buck said: “I would say that his passion for Chelsea has increased not decreased. His passion for football has increased, not decreased. “His knowledge of football has increased exponentially. I'm not talking about what goes at the megastore, I'm talking about football. It would be pretty hard to name a current footballer that he couldn't give you statistics for.” He said Abramovich had attended every game in the first season following his takeover of the club in 2003 but now attends less often in the wake of the financial crisis and the birth of his sixth child in 2009. “But he doesn't miss a game in the sense that wherever he is in the world he watches the Chelsea game. He calls Eugene Tenenbaum [trusted club director and associate] or whoever after the game and they talk about it. He is very much on top of things.” Buck, who has been at Abramovich's side since the 2003 takeover, described meeting him before the businessman had learned to speak English. “To those of us he was meeting for the first time, he was outgoing and friendly,” Buck said. “'Have a cup of tea,' or if you were at his house, 'Have something to eat.' He wasn't cold at all; he was very warm. It wasn't like I was slapping him on the back or telling him dirty jokes, though.” After telling advisers he “wouldn't mind buying a football team”, Abramovich hired investment bank UBS Warburg to write a feasibility study, which listed a number of possible options. “It said that Manchester United would be expensive and the fans would go crazy. Aston Villa was for sale but was in Birmingham and the long-term opportunities were limited. “Tottenham was on the list along with Chelsea. They were in London; they were in financial trouble. Roman's advisers tried to arrange meetings with Tottenham and Chelsea but for whatever reason, they couldn't set up a meeting with Tottenham, or Tottenham didn't want to meet.” A provisional deal with then-owner Ken Bates was sealed not with vodka but with Coca-Cola at the Dorchester Hotel in central London, Buck said. He said Abramovich and his team had been “naive” about the football club's place in British culture and had not anticipated the long-running media fascination in the new Russian owner. “We thought, 'Yeah, it will be a decent story for a couple of weeks and then Roman will go back and have his private life.' Because he is a very private guy. He clearly didn't do things for the notoriety or publicity because that is not him.” Buck admitted that the influx of Abramovich's money had “changed football forever” and led to a new trend of high-spending foreign owners like Manchester City's Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan. “That's why we aren't complaining about some of the things City are doing,” he said. “We started it after all but, having said that, it is a free world. “Obviously what we have done has not pleased the fans of West Ham or Manchester United, but they sure have pleased the fans at Chelsea.” Buck, an American lawyer who moved to London in 1983, said he agreed to take on the chairman's role because of his support for Chelsea. “If [Abramovich] had taken over Tottenham, I wouldn't have wanted to do it.” He jokingly described himself as “co-owner” of the club, pointing out that he owned one share in Chelsea to the Russian's 83 million. Buck said Chelsea was eager to break the cycle of short-term managers and replicate the “more stable management structure” of Arsene Wenger's tenure at Arsenal or Sir Alex Ferguson's at Manchester United.
