Shevy is back and almost ready
Thursday, Jun 08, 2006
Andriy Shevchenko returned from injury tonight, Thursday, just before the hour
in Ukraine’s 3-0 win in Luxembourg. He left the bench, and ten minutes from
the end scored his side’s second goal.
The strike was a simple tap-in, and brought him his 29th goal in 64
internationals. It was his first appearance since injuring a knee at Parma
while playing for Milan on May 7th.
Ukraine’s coach Oleg Blokhin warned against assuming Shevchenko has completely
recovered. “In a few days we can say how he is feeling,” he insisted after
the victory.
Shevchenko has missed the last three internationals. Ukraine will play their
first ever World Cup finals match next Wednesday against Spain, and the new
Chelsea striker will be expecting to be their captain.

Ballack out of World Cup opener
Thursday, Jun 08, 2006
Michael Ballack, Chelsea’s new midfielder, will not captain Germany in their
World Cup opener tomorrow, Friday, because of his calf injury.
Coach Jurgen Klinsmann admitted in a press conference this morning: “It seems
Michael will not be on the pitch for the Costa Rica game. We'll leave him on
the sidelines for this game and have him fit for the next one.
“It’s annoying but not the end of the world. There’s always someone who can
jump in. The important thing now is to look ahead. We want a fully fit Michael
Ballack, not a 50 per cent player. Fingers crossed he'll be back training soon.
The doctors are working round the clock.
“He’s our leader and our skipper and we hoped to have him available. But it's
a pity, not a problem. We're in great shape without him.
“It's more important for us to get him back in shape so that he can rejoin
practice and get in shape for the next matches."
Germany open the World Cup against Costa Rica, and follow up next Wednesday
against Poland.
