NEW YORK — Rajon Rondo [stats] spent the morning hours in a Manhattan hotel
conference room helping decide the players’ next move in their collective
bargaining battle with the NBA.
When he emerged from a press conference, at which the union decided it would
essentially disband its leadership and file suit against the league, Rondo was
asked how difficult it was to go along with the plan considering the Celtics
[team stats]’ circumstances.
His team’s veteran core is in the twilight of its viability, and there is now
the increasingly real possibility Paul Pierce [stats], Ray Allen and Kevin
Garnett could lose perhaps their last chance at glory together.

“It wasn’t an easy decision,” said Rondo, the team’s alternate player
representative. “But at the end of the day, you can’t look selfishly when you
try to make these decisions. You try to look for the best decision as a whole.”
Asked if he was afraid of losing the season, he said, “I ain’t afraid of
nothing.
“That’s part of the decision we made as a whole. We don’t have any regrets.
We’ve just got to stand strong.
“I hope there’ll be a season. That’s the plan. We want to play. The fans
want to see us play. Right now, it’s a little bump in the road.”
Said bump could turn into a costly financial mountain range if the league
refuses to come back to the bargaining table and the players do not succeed in
court. But it remains a general truth that the players will not be victorious
in the court of public opinion.
“Right now, we can’t really worry about that,” Rondo said. “We did what was
best for us as a unit, as a union.
“You’ve got to take yourself out of the equation. I think that’s the biggest
thing. We’re a family; we have to stick together. This is a tough time for us.
This is something you have to go (through) as far as business negotiations.”

Pierce is the Celtics’ primary player rep, and this is the second straight
meeting to discuss an NBA offer that he’s missed.
Billy Hunter, executive director of the union, insisted again that Pierce’s
absence was due to the fact he would have to come in from the West Coast. He
added that the Celts captain’s push for union decertification is now a moot
point as it relates to his relation with the leadership of what will now become
a trade association.
“It’s the same as last week,” said Hunter, referring to last Tuesday’s
players-only session. “But if he’s a member of the decert group, then we’ve
already done what he’s seeking to do. So if we were in opposite groups, we no
longer are.”
Rondo explained he was here for the Celtics players because, “I’m closer. I
have things going on in my home that I wasn’t able to come to the last
meeting, but I’m closer. Paul and I talked. We feel the same way.”
Jeff Green, a restricted free agent, was the other player with Celtics ties
here yesterday.
“That was unexpected,” said Rondo, “but I’m glad he’s here.”
