* The Cardinals appear to be getting closer to moving Brendan Ryan, who
is drawing interest from the Twins.
* The team has "pressed" to sign Bengie Molina, but a club source
believes a Ryan trade is likely to happen before Molina makes a decision one
way or the other.
* Molina has been told by the Cards that he's their preferred choice as a
backup catcher, but he'd have to be willing to accept the reduced playing
time and salary that come with that role. The club has allotted about $1MM
for their backstop opening.

the true value here is to secretly sign all 3 molinas but only have yadier
listed on the 25-man roster. la russa can sneak in bengie or jose on defense
to give yadier a couple innings off here and there, to keep him fresh. yadier
would become the first catcher in mlb history to catch every inning of every
game for 162 games. and the cards wouldn't have to carry a backup catcher on
the roster, la russa could use the slot for an extra lefty specialist in the
pen.
with the mask and catchers' gear, they might be able to get away with it.
yadier just has to take all the at bats. oh, and bengie just needs to lose 50
lb.
