EDMONTON — Google launched its popular Street View service in Edmonton on
Tuesday, letting netizens the world over navigate the streets of Edmonton
from the comfort of their own computer desks.
News of the launch spread like wildfire within Edmonton’s Twitter community,
with users sharing some of the strange things captured by Google’s cameras
as they roamed city streets earlier this year, recording everything from
freeways to nooks and crannies citywide. As many unwitting Edmontonians will
doubtless discover over the coming weeks, not all shots of the city, or its
citizens, are flattering.
Google Street View allows users to roam a city’s streets virtually,
navigating through neighbourhoods with panoramic photos. Google attempts to
hide the identities of the people photographed by Street View’s cameras by
blurring their faces, though this technique isn’t always flawless. As a
result, people around the world have made an online sport of tracking down
the odd activities taking place on the streets, or behind windows, in cities
with the service.
Winnipeg also joined the Google Street View club on Tuesday.
Calgary, along with several other major Canadian centres, made its Street
View debut earlier this year, leaving Edmontonians scratching their heads
over the capital city’s omission.
