Pirlo: “I will play for Italy if the new coach needs me”

The Italian national team’s charter flight is set to land at 13:45 CEST
today at Fiumicino Airport in Rome. The flight departed Galeao Airport in Rio
de Janeiro last night and shortly stopped over at Malpensa Airport in Milan a
few minutes ago. During the flight, FIGC Vice President and Head of
Delegation Demetrio Albertini invited Andrea Pirlo to rethink his decision to
quit the Azzurri: “If the new coach decides he needs my help, I am always
happy to help,” answered the midfielder.
Demetrio Albertini analysed the Azzurri’s experience at the World Cup
yesterday, before leaving the Mangaratiba camp: “We take home something
positive in terms of commitment and organization, but we are obviously
disappointed with our performances on the pitch. We all had different
expectations.” Albertini also praised FIGC President Giancarlo Abete, saying
“We all have to recognize his great strength and high moral values, he is an
extraordinary person.” The former AC Milan midfielder also touched upon the
appointment of a new Head Coach after Cesare Prandelli’s resignation: “We
will all meet and reach a decision about who should be Italy’s new Head
Coach. I will keep in mind Abete’s words, who said that he will try to
convince Prandelli to stay during next Monday’s board meeting. From a
sporting point of view, the evaluation of the last four years is positive,
even if we have been eliminated at the World Cup.”
