Wang wins in Bisons debut
STAFF REPORTS
Niagara Gazette
Niagara Gazette — Chien-Ming Wang pitched all seven innings of his
first-ever start for the Buffalo Bisons, earning a win to complete a
sweep of the Syracuse Chiefs in a Sunday doubleheader at Coca-Cola
Field in Buffalo.
Wang, the former major leaguer, held the Chiefs to just one run and
three hits as Buffalo won the second game, 4-1. However, Wang wasn’t
the only Bisons pitcher to get a win while going the distance. The
Herd’s starter in the first game, Dave Bush, also pitched a complete
game as Buffalo opened the doubleheader with a 6-2 win.
Buffalo opened the first game by taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of
the first. Kevin Pillar hit a two-run homer, followed later in the
inning by a Eugenio Velez single that scored Mauro Gomez.
Syracuse scored two runs in the top of the third but the Herd matched
that in the bottom of the inning. Anthony Gose singled to
centerfield, scoring Jim Negrych and Andy LaRoche. LaRoche singled in
the fifth inning to score Gomez and complete the scoring.
Bush (8-6) struck out eight batters while surrendering only five hits.
Then came the Bisons debut of Wang, the former New York Yankee,
Washington National and Toronto Blue Jay.
As Wang kept the Chiefs’ bats mostly silent, Buffalo got all their
runs in the second inning. Sean Ochinko brought home three of them
with a home run that scored LaRoche and Velez followed by himself.
Ryan Goins later singled to score Mike McCoy, who put himself in
scoring position by stealing his 18th base of the season.
According to the Bisons, Sunday’s games were only the second time in
the franchise’s modern-era history when both games were won by
pitchers that hurled complete games. The only other time it happened,
according to their records, was on July 18, 2009, when Jon Niese and
Nelson Figueroa both pitched shutouts, 1-0 and 2-0, respectively,
against the Toledo Mud Hens.
The Bisons (45-45) are scheduled off Monday then travel to Syracuse
Tuesday for the first of two road games.
